When the size of a "filling" exceeds a certain proportion of the tooth, it can often be replaced with a porcelain onlay.  Dr. Kaggen likes to use porcelain onlays because they preserve and strengthen the remaining part of the tooth.  Once bonded in, they look natural and make the tooth as strong as it was before it ever had a filling.
